New Email Address: As much as I hated to do this, with our switch to high speed internet access, we have changed our email address. I’m getting entirely too old to sit and wait for information to load! It is now linked to our web site. You can use either info @myfiberworks.com or karol @myfiberworks.com (leave out the space). Please change your address books. When I send the newsletter I send it to myself at simmerk @neiasynod.org with blind copies to you. If you receive the newsletter by email, please add the karol address to your allowed list so it does not get perceived as spam mail. If you would like to add your email to help save paper, postage and ink, let us know.

Christmas in July Sale: To encourage you to start project gifts for Christmas giving now, we are having a 15% off sale on all Christmas fabrics, patterns and supplies to stitch these projects from July 15th – 26th. Join us for Cool Caribbean Crazy Day outside on the sidewalk from 7:00-4:00 on Sat. July 12th. Many Waverly downtown merchants will have their bargains outside for your shopping pleasure.

Program Ideas: If anyone needs a program idea and would like to hear about a stitching technique, see a display or demonstration or have a “how to” lesson at your group meeting give me a call. Have needle, will travel. We’d love to interest the younger age people, like scouts or 4 H-ers, especially, in the art of stitching.

Limited Editions: Just wanted to share some limited edition kits we have left from a few designers – when they are gone that’s it - no reorders are possible: Heartstrings = Over the River (Xst); Lisa Steele = Lisa’s Garden and Terry’s Garden; Lorri Birmingham Nantucket basket kits = Floral Wreath, Lighthouse, Hydrangea, Strawberry, May, Spring; Just Nan class kits = Pansy Cameo, Diamond Bouquet, Once in a Blue Moon, Seeds of Friendship, Christmas Keepsake Frame plus Lady Scarlet’s Journey I, II, III, Chapter and Verse – Patience and Queen’s Blue Bird Box.

Flood update: For those of you not on our email list – we have been closed for about three weeks cleaning up from the flood waters of the Cedar River. None of our merchandise was injured, but because of river seepage in the building we did have to replace the carpet. That meant moving everything out including fixtures. We are back and ready to assist you with your stitching needs.

New Framing Area: Yes, we still do needlework framing it has just moved back across from the bathroom. We have gotten all the ready-made frames moved to our new framing room. A big thank you goes to my brother and husband for the work on transforming a cold, wall-less room into a cozy frame room. It was a challenge working with the structure already there.

TECHNIQUE TIP: Hang ‘Em High
Although most think of a quilt to be used on a bed, it also makes a great wall hanging. Think of old world tapestries that were hung to help keep castles less drafty as well as being a work of art. A fabric sleeve, usually 4 inches wide and a couple of inches shorter than the quilt, is sewn on the backside so that some type of rod can be inserted. A wooden dowel, a curtain rod or a piece of 1 or 1 ½” x 3/8” (depending on the size of your quilt) flat molding are options. A permanent sleeve is attached after the quilting is finished but before the binding is put in place. For quilts that are not directional, put a sleeve at the top and the bottom and switch it occasionally to reduce the stress on the fabric. Commercially made quilt holders allow the quilt to be slid between two piece of wood and tightened to grip the fabric. Curtain rods often have decorative ends that can add to the appearance. If you use the brackets that come with the rods, the quilt will hang slightly away from the wall and allow air circulation. Wooden dowels can be cut longer than the sleeve but not as long as the quilt for an invisible support hung on two nails. Or cut the dowel longer than the quilt and add a decorative cord for a hanger or wooden motifs on each end to mirror the quilt design. Be sure to choose a location that is out of direct sunlight and away from excessive heat or moisture. You can change your décor seasonally and give the quilts a rest from the stress of hanging continually. When storing quilts use acid free tissue paper to pad the folds and fold on different lines each time. Use layers of muslin or cotton sheets to protect quilts from wooden surfaces such as a drawer or cedar chest.
