The quilt cost is spread out over 12 months to help your budget. Call us now, before you miss your opportunity to participate. We have changed the meeting time to the fourth Thursday of the month.
Price Adjustments: Both DMC (thread) and Zweigart (fabric) have announced price increases. We will be adjusting our prices as necessary. Free patterns: Thanks to Waxing Moon and Forever in My Heart for sharing their patterns. TECHNIQUE TIP: Quilt Backing You finished piecing the front of your quilt, now what do you do? It takes a lot of yardage to cover the back of a quilt – it should be at least 2 inches larger than the front in every direction for ease of basting. The fabric should be as good a quality as the material used on the front. The quilt’s intended use will help determine if you want a solid or print on the back. If you are using lots of elaborate quilting, a solid fabric on the back will show off the quilting design. If you are using a simple design, or an outline quilting, or are a novice hand quilter, use of a print might be a better choice since stitches will tend to blend in with the backing. A wall quilt backing is not as visually important as a bed quilt where the back will be seen as it is used. The backing lends support to the front especially in a wall hanging. Since the lengthwise straight grain is the strongest, try to have it follow the length of your wall quilts. Backing that is 108” wide is available in a limited choice of solids and prints, which would cover any quilt that is 104” long or shorter. You can usually figure 42” usable fabric width on cotton quilting fabrics after you remove the selvage. Selvages should be cut off before seaming as they may cause pulling or puckering. Use 10-12 stitches per inch and a ½” seam allowance on backing seams. Press seams open if you are hand quilting. It is possible to make your seam vertical or horizontal when using fabric that is not big enough to cover in one piece. It is more visually pleasing and the quilt will wear better if you use two equally placed seams rather than one down the middle. You can use another pieced top for a reversible quilt or use left over fabric from the top to make a simple pieced design for the backing. After putting lots of time and effort into your quilt, you want it to be around for a long time, so it’s worth the best quality fabric for the backing that you can afford. Whatever you choose, be sure the front and the back fabrics harmonize with each other. Class Schedule: One half of the class fee is required at the time of registration to hold your place. Please register at least two weeks in advance of scheduled dates to allow for ordering of supplies in time for class. Fees include supplies and instruction.
