Holiday Open House: Waverly merchants will have an open house on Saturday, Nov. 22nd from 9:00-5:00. Join us for goodies. Then on Thursday, December 11th, do Christmas Greetings on Main and enjoy live window scenes, hay rides and hot chocolate. The St. Paul’s Lutheran Church tone chime choir is planning to play in our window again from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Fill out your wish list while you are here.

Coming Project of the Month Opportunities: In 2009 join us as for either a 10 month quilt with matching pillow or “do the splits” with a monthly wall hanging.

First: Bits ‘n Pieces quilt called Stars Around the Garden. This beautiful quilt will measure 87” x 102” finished size. The cost is $19.00 a month. You will make 2 pieced blocks each month, an appliqued center and your choice of either a pieced or appliqued border and a pair of pillowcases will finish up this project. We will probably use several of our Thimbleberries fabrics in this one. (Due to the lack of interest, we are not doing the Block of the Month from Thimbleberries in 2009.) Fabric will be enough for the front, borders, binding and pillowcases. You will furnish the backing fabric or may purchase it separately for 10% off.
Second: The Wooden Bear patterns for “Straddling” wall hangings that finish approx.19 ½” x 23 ½”. These are cute as cn be and we will start with a bunny holding an egg for April so you will have time to finish these and hang them for the month of the theme. Each has a pieced neutral background with applique film used to afix the design. You may choose to go around these pieces with a stitch of your choice either by hand or machine. Kits will be $25.00 per month. This includes the pattern, fabric for the front and binding plus buttons for eyes.

Let me know right away if you would like to participate in either or both of these projects so I can have enough kits ready in January. If you sign up, we expect a commitment for the entire series.

Please note we will be closed on Thursday, Nov 27th for Thanksgiving, Thursday, Dec. 25th for Christmas, Saturday, Dec. 27th for our daughter Jennifer’s wedding, and Thursday, Jan 1st for New Year’s Day. We will close early, 2:00 p.m., on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve and at 4:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving Eve.

Class schedule: We will resume a class schedule after the first of the year. With your busy holiday schedules and my wedding preparations, I have not offered anything in November and December. Remember if you need a quiet place away from phone, family, etc. you are always welcome to come to our table to stitch. We will be glad to help with any stitching or finishing questions. Let me know what techniques you would like to learn so I can include them in 2009.

Weather Reminder: With winter approaching, please call first to make sure we are here if there is bad weather. Sometimes it takes me a while to dig out on our country roads to get into town.

TECHNIQUE TIP: Finished! Now what?
You have completed the stitching part of your project. What will you do with it, besides add it to the collection under your bed? Putting it in a frame is an obvious choice, but how about a pillow? You can do a knife-edge or box-edge with a ruffle or cord for accent and how about them tassels. Some pillows are made so you can interchange designs for different occasions. Depending on the shape, some pieces would be cute stand-ups – especially figures like snowmen and Santas. These are usually arched at the top or follow the design shape sewn to a backing fabric and then stuffed and weighted to sit on a base. Another idea for smaller pieces is to make them into boxes. The design is attached around either foam core or mat board with the other edges covered in coordinating fabric. Edges can be accented with cording or lovely ribbons – wire edged work great for non-saggy bows. These can be rectangular, square or triangular to go with the design shape. Bellpulls are an option for hanging on a metal or wooden rod. Needle rolls or scissor fobs may work for some designs and doilies or table runners for others. There are several wooden or acrylic accessories such as box tops, coasters, purse tops, basket liners, mirror inserts, serving trays or clocks that make lovely finishes. Album covers and tote bag, apron, or fanny pack inserts work well, too. Christmas designs may become stockings, ornaments or tree skirts. Do something with your finished pieces so they may be seen and enjoyed by all.

Class Schedule: This will resume in the next newsletter. I have listed the biscornu of the month below – we need to catch up a bit so I have included selections through January.

Biscornu of the Month for October = From Dinky Dyes – Halloween Biscornu. This one has black cats and includes black and purple silks, black Swarovski bicone beads and a pair of black cat scissors to match. About 3” finished size and done on 32 count antique white Jobelan – let me know if you’d like the fabric (+$1.25). $22.50.

Biscornu of the month for November = From Cat’s Whiskers – Fabulous Fall – Includes limited edition hand dyed silk thread from Dinky Dyes. Finished size 3” and shown on 28 count yellow Cashel linen – let me know if you need fabric (+$2.52). $14.50. We have other seasons in this series if you want them too. Pattern shows you how to sequence your over dyed thread so all four quadrants are the same color-wise.

Biscornu of the month for December = From Indigo Rose – Beads, Buttons & Bows. This one is a little larger than previous ones at 7 ¾” square when worked on 32 ct. Belfast linen. The model is shown using Caron Waterlilies over dyed silks and Soie d’Alger floss with accent of Mill Hill pebble beads. The alphabet and year surround the middle motif. Pattern: $9.25.

Biscornu of the month January = My Big Toe – Monogram Block. Not only does this pattern have a biscornu, it has designs for a scissor fob/ornament, scissor block and framed piece with your choice of initial letter. Biscornu is approx 2 ½” finished size done on 32 count antique white Jobelan – let me know if you need the fabric (+$1.25). Pattern only = $7.25. Threads shown are Weeks Dye Works Mascara and Crimson but you maybe substitute black and red DMC or other colors if you prefer.
