TECHNIQUE TIP: Wool Felting

Felting is currently enjoying a popularity up-swing. Felting transforms the size, texture and density of either knitted pieces or roving or thread. One can do 3 dimensional shapes, appliques, or accessories like hats, mittens, purses, scarves, slippers and pillows. If you are knitting, you will want to make a test swatch to see how your yarn felts. Wool yarns that are not labeled machine washable work best, although you can use blends that are at least 50% wool. White and light colors may not felt as well as heathers or darker colors. After the piece has been knitted, it is put in the washing machine on hot wash and cold rinse cycle. Add about a tablespoon of laundry detergent as this helps the fibers swell and rub together binding them into felted fabric. Longer agitation = more shrinkage. You may not want to let the spin portion of the cycle run as it can set permanent creases. Roll in a towel and gently squeeze out excess water. Block into the shape you want the finished article to be. Let air dry. Do not use the dryer or your piece will continue to shrink. You will not be able to distinguish individual stitches and a felted piece may be cut to shape without unraveling.
You may also use wool roving or other natural fibers and a needle to felt the fibers together. Roving is carded, combed wool before it is spun into yarn. It is available in natural and dyed colors. All animal hair is covered with scales called cuticle. Moisture and heat cause these scales to soften and rise slightly from the hair shaft. If they are exposed to friction they begin to lock together. The felting needles are very sharp and have barbs along the edges to interlace the cuticles. Felting needles can be used individually or several may be put into a handle to cover a larger area at once. You must use some kind of mat underneath your needle to protect not only the surface but also to keep from breaking your needle. Jewelry, pins, appliques and 3 –D pieces are usual needle felting projects.

Class Schedule: One half of the class fee is required at the time of registration to hold your place. Please register at least two weeks in advance of scheduled dates to allow for ordering of supplies in time for class. Fees include supplies and instruction. Please add 7% tax to fee if you mail it in. There are no refunds for class fees once I have ordered supplies, but you may reschedule a makeup time at your convenience.

I have not scheduled any formal classes for the rest of November or December. Most people’s schedules are so busy they don’t want to take time out to come to a class. If you have time and want to learn something in particular or start stitching on a certain project, get 2 or 3 people together and give me a call to set up a “private class” for you. We will offer open stitching anytime we are open. I will make an effort to keep the table cleaned off so if you need a place away from prying eyes or peace from the telephone, you can come here and stitch without interruption.

Sat. Jan 12th 9:00-12:00 – XL-ENT Angel January: This begins a monthly angel series done on 18 count needlepoint canvas. Pattern will be line drawn on canvas from a template. Threads are Needlepoint Silk floss and stitches are simple yet interesting. Includes cording and backing materials. Each angel will be accented with beads and a charm. January’s is a snowflake. Finished size about 4” ornament– these are so cute you will want to hang them all year long not just on your Christmas tree. Class Fee = $32.50.

Thur. Jan 17th 6:00-8:00 P.M. – Quilt Club Time: Choose from Thimbleberries Lodge Big Club Quilt or Seasons in a Row Quilt to work on during this time. Demonstrations, helpful hints, extra projects will be offered. Maybe even a snack! See first page for details of cost.

Sat. Jan 19th and Feb 2nd 9:00-12:00 – Honor Thy Needle: This is a wonderful pyramid shaped etui. It folds open to reveal a place to keep your needles, a small pair of scissors and pin cushion in the center. Pull on the cording and it closes back up. The design is worked over one thread with Dinky Dyes overdyed silks – seven different colors. Model is shown on Chai Tea 28 count Jobelan, but you may choose your own color if you’d like. There is some preparation stitching so you will want to register early enough to get the sectioning done before the first class. The second class will be two weeks later to allow you to finish any stitching not done in the first class and assembly will be the day’s agenda. You will need to choose a lining fabric to coordinate with your ground. All templates are cut and ready to cover. You may wish to bring magnification to class. Class Fee = $82.50.
